Conneaut, OH, (July 18, 2008): JoAnn Clinger was memorialized in a special 30 lap Applebee Motorsports E-Mod feature paying $1500 to win that was led nearly green to checkers by Randy Hall, but Dave Hess Jr getting by in the final set of turns for the victory by half a car length. Jay Watson (Precision Weld Fab FASTRAK Late Models) and Ken Zimmer (Joslin-Landis Insurance Agency Street Stocks) both picked up their third feature win of the season while John Boyd got his first-ever win.
With Jim Clinger on the flagstand waving the green in memory of his wife, JoAnn, twenty-five of the area’s fastest E-Mods (pared from 42 entrants) raced for the $1500 to win in memory of the long-time racing fan and car-owner. Randy Hall led from the pole position at the start with Jack Young in pursuit. Justin Carlson ran third with Dave Hess Jr and Dave Groves battling for fourth in the early running. Hess got by Groves then began working on Justin Carlson for third, completing the pass at lap twelve. At lap thirteen Hess was second, getting by Young but Hall had a quarter lap lead although now mired in heavy lapped traffic. The traffic allowed Hess to close in and a caution at lap twenty-one put Hess even nearer with only three lapped cars between he and the leader. By the end of one more lap of green, there were no cars between the leader and his nearest pursuer. With five laps remaining Hall’s lead was a mere five car-lengths and closing. At the two-lap signal there was only one car-length and Hess was right on Hall’s bumper at the white flag. Hess, who just turned twenty-four on July 14th, dived below Hall heading into turn three on the final lap with Hall coming back on the low side but coming up short by about half a car length. Young was third with Groves fourth and Carlson fifth.
The 16-car Precision Weld Fab FASTRAK Late Model feature was led to the green by Jay Watson and Bob Dorman, but Mike Lesky slapped the wall even before getting to the start line, necessitating a complete restart. Jay Watson led after the event finally got going with Bob Dorman second until lap six when Dorman and Barton got together, leaving Dorman backwards at turn one and both relegated to the rear. When green was re-deployed, Watson again led with Alan Dellinger now second and Roger French third. Dennis Lunger, starting eleventh, was third at halfway, but Watson was on the way to the win, his third of the season with Dellinger holding onto second. Lunger settled for third with Roger French fourth and Barton back up to fifth.
Shaun Fawcett got to turn one ahead of Jamie Brown to start out the Joslin-Landis Street Stock feature, but no laps were completed before caution was over the raceway for debris on the back straight. Two laps were in when points leader Dan Lewis spun in turn two, losing a lap before coming back onto the track and stopping for the yellow. Fawcett led after green with Ken Zimmer coming to second and beginning to challenge for the lead at lap six. On the final lap Zimmer got by Fawcett coming out of turn two and went on to his third win of the season. Third was Jamie Brown with Dave McLaughlin fourth and Russ Byler fifth.
John Boyd led from the start of the Challenger Mini Stock feature with yellow coming over the raceway at the end of one lap for Kyle Dickinson, who had lost the right front wheel on the front straight. After green, Boyd’s car began trailing copious amounts of smoke (or steam) but still was able to lead with Ed Huge second and last week’s winner Joe Plesniak third. Plesniak was soon by Huge, but the gallant little Dodge Daytona had enough left to take the win, his first-ever at Raceway 7. Plesniak was second with Huge third.
