Conneaut, OH, (July 11, 2008): A bright, warm evening greeted fans and drivers to Raceway 7 Friday night. One would never know it was Christmas Time at Raceway 7 by the weather but Santa took his annual vacation from the North Pole to stop by the Ohio speedplant. In honor of Santa, and Lake View Ford, Bike races were held for the kids in several age groups with trophies for winners presented by the Winner’s Circle Trophy Shop. Meanwhile the racing of the 4-wheeled contestants was hot and heavy with all four classes registering first-time winners this season. Scoring those all-Important first wins of the season were Dennis Lunger, Jack young, Dave McLaughlin, and Joe Plesniak. For Lunger and Plesniak it was their first-ever at Raceway 7, for Young and McLaughlin it was their first win this season.

Dave Osterberg and Roger French were the front row for the Precision Weld Fab FASTRAK Late Model feature with Jones taking the lead at the drop of the green. At the end of one lap Dennis Lunger was up to second from sixth at the start. At lap seven, Lunger got by Jones in turn one, then was hit by Jones as Lunger moved up the track, causing Jones to spin out of the second spot. At a restart from lap eight, Barton came to second but Lunger was able tom open distance on his pursuer until lap eleven when Barton used the low side to come by for the lead at lap twelve. Lunger was able to get back by the following lap but Barton was again alongside at fourteen. Barton held the lead at lap sixteen with Lunger again coming by to lead seventeen. A yellow flag for the spinning car of Bert Blackson slowed the action at lap nineteen. Lunger, looking for his first win at Raceway 7, brought the field back to the green with Barton, looking for his third win of the season, and Bobby Powell, looking for his second win, sharing the second row. With one to go, Barton was again pulling alongside for the lead when Tom Kemp got into the wall in turn one, once again slowing the action. For the one-lap dash for the checkers, led the way with Barton making a gallant last-turn bid for the win, pulling even coming off the turn, but Lunger having the momentum to pull off the win, the first of his career at Raceway 7. Powell spun in turn one of the final lap, but kept going for a ninth place finish. Barton was second with Alex Anderson third, Roger French fourth, and John Lacki fifth.

Ron Roncaglione and Scott Stiffler led the nineteen Applebee Motorsports E-Mods to the green with Roncaglione getting the early lead. A four-car pile-up in turn three quickly brought out the yellow. By lap 4 Jack Young was second from his ninth starting spot. At halfway Young, running the low groove, was challenging for the lead but a caution for the spinning car of Todd Roncaglione in turn four again slowed the action. At green, Young gained the advantage with Gary Eicher also coming by Roncaglione for second. Roncaglione just nipped Eicher at the finish for the runner-up position. Young led the rest of the event, leading Roncaglione, Eicher, Rich Michael Jr, and Bill Taylor to the checkers.

By the end of lap one, outside pole-sitter Dave McLaughlin led the Joslin-Landis Street Stocks by a wide margin over Russ Byler. At lap three Art Gilchrist’s engine expired and he was unable to get back to the pits, bringing caution over the speedway. After restarting, Shaun Fawcett came to second and caught McLaughlin with three laps remaining, but was unable to get by. McLaughlin scored his first win of the season with Fawcett second, Ken Zimmer getting by Byler for third on the final lap, then points leader Dan Lewis in fifth.

Joe Plesniak led the Mini Stock feature from the first lap after starting in fourth. He then went on for his first win with Bud Sergeff second, Vince Simms third.

Conneaut, OH, (July 4, 2008): For the fourth time and the third different name, Raceway 7 attempted to beat the weather and run its classic event originally known as the “Fall Classic”. After two rainouts at the end of last season the name was changed to the “Fall into Spring Classic” and scheduled for opening night. After rain again plagued the event, the name was again changed to the “Freedom Classic”, with blue skies, sun, and warm temperatures greeting a large crowd of race fans and a full pit area.

Chris Hackett led the Roberts Trucking Super Late Model 30-lap special for the win. John Lacki took over the lead of the Precision Weld Fab FASTRAK Late Model Regional event on a lap 21 restart and led the rest of the event for his first win of the season. Russ Dunn prevailed in the Applebee Motorsports E-Mod feature after a back and forth early battle with Mike Potosky. Dave Ferringer led flag-to-flag in the Zimmer Service Center Open Street Stock finale. The Challenger “Crack the Whip” event was won by Vince Simms.

Jared Miley and Chris Hackett brought the Roberts Trucking Super Late Model field to the green which lasted one lap until Russell King and Greg Oakes had problems resulting in King sideways on the front straight and Oakes heading to the pits with damage. Dave Tackett also headed to the pits with unknown problems. At the restart Hackett held the lead for another lap before caution again flew for a spin by Alan Dellinger. Hackett, Miley, and Dutch Davies led with Miley trying at every turn to gain the advantage to no avail. After a restart at lap six, Chad Valone was able to get by Davis for third while Hackett and Miley fought over the lead. Valone then got by Miley after a lap eleven restart with Davies following into third. At halfway Hackett was still leading with Valone, Davies, Miley, and Matt Urban filling out the top five. At lap nineteen third-running Miley slapped the fourth-turn wall with a tire down. Following Hackett at this point was still Valone with Matt Urban third and perennial hard luck driver Mickey Wright up to fourth from his sixteenth starting position. Valone and Urban raced side by side for a lap after green at lap twenty before Valone again reestablished himself in second. However, neither Valone nor anyone else was able to get close to Hackett as he went on to the $3000 Freedom Classic Victory. Valone was second with Urban third, David Scott, from 11th on the start, and Wright.

Dave Osterberg led from the pole position for the first lap before caution slowed the Precision Weld Fab FASTRAK regional event. Osterberg continued to lead after green again appeared with Tom Snyder coming to second at lap five, John Lacki third, Alan Dellinger fourth, and Dennis Lunger fifth when caution again came over the raceway at lap eight. At the restart several cars, including fourth-running Dellinger spun in turn one. After green, due to the double-file restart Tom Snyder got by the leader and four laps later Lacki got by for second. Lunger then got by Osterberg for third. Dick Barton came to third at lap twenty, ten a lap later Lunger lost the handle in turn three, looping his mount. The resulting double-file restart erased a half straight lead and gave the second-running Lacki the preferred line allowing him to gain the lead when green again flew. At the finish it was Lacki, Snyder, Bumpy Hedman, Dick Barton, and Alan Dellinger.

Russ Dunn led from the start of the Applebee Motorsports E-Mod feature with Mike Potosky second. Potosky led at lap five but Dunn went back by in turn one. After a caution Potosky again got by, this time making it stick until lap 12 when Dunn again took over at the front. Potosky’s luck got even worse a lap later when he spun in turn three after contact with Joel Watson. Watson was sent to the rear for his part in the incident. Dunn went on to the win over Shawn Shingledecker, Percy McDonald, Rich Michael Jr, and Jason Genco.

The Zimmer Service Center Open Street Stock feature was led flag to flag by former division champion Dave Ferringer from the pole with Don Kramer in second. Kramer took over at the front on lap six but his lead was short lived as he spun in turn two, less than half a lap after taking the lead. Ferringer won the event, marred by twelve caution periods over the 20-lap distance. Ken Zimmer finished second with Tim Deutsch third, Andy Buckley fourth, and Chris Withers fifth.

Vince Simms won the Challenger Mini-Stock “Crack the Whip” event.

Conneaut, OH, (June 27, 2008): In the 1980’s Modifieds ran weekly at the northeast Oh speedplant now known as Raceway 7. Lou Blaney, father of NASCAR Sprint Cup star Dave Blaney, won more features here than any other driver, amassing 45 wins in a run that stretched from 1978 to 1989. Rex King led the crash-strewn event flag to flag, winning in dominating fashion over Jim Weller and Rob Kristyak.

In weekly racing action Bobby Powell, Alan Dellinger, Dan Lewis, and Chuck Simms Jr all picked up their first Raceway 7 victories of the season.

After a short tribute to Modified legend Lou Blaney, twenty-seven Big Block Modifieds took to the track for their 25-lap feature, led by pace trucks from Mercer Raceway Park, Sharon Speedway, and Tri-City Speedway, three tracks that Blaney, who ran his last races in 2004, competed at regularly at the end of his career. Rex King started from the pole and led the distance, slowed several times for multi-car crashes. Jim Weller Jr ran second but had nothing for the leader. Rob Kristyak was third followed by Joe Crawford and Tim Doran.

The start of the Precision Weld Fab FASTRAK Late Model feature saw nine of the seventeen starters in a pile-up in turn one triggered when outside front row starter Jay Watson, a two-time winner this season, lost the handle and spun in front of the field. Alex Anderson was the only car not able to restart the event. Bob Powell led from the pole the entire event with Dick Barton coming to second from his ninth starting position by lap two. After a restart at lap seven, Jay Watson replaced Barton in the runner-up spot. Barton then retired to the pits at lap eleven with overheating problems. At halfway Alan Dellinger was challenging Watson for second, but Powell continued his march to the checkers, the first of the season at Raceway 7 for the points leader. Watson managed to hold Dellinger at bay for second with Bert Blackson fourth and Dave Osterberg fifth.

Scott Stiffler started outside the front row and quickly established himself as the dominate driver, charging out to a large lead before Lee Patrick spun at lap two for the first caution of the event. At lap three Jack Young was second and Alan Dellinger third. Several caution periods slowed the action. After a lap seven restart Dellinger moved to second and pulled by Stiffler on the high side at the halfway point. From there to the end of the event, the two-time Super Late Model champion pulled out to an ever-increasing lead. Former E-Mod champion Joel Watson came to second at lap sixteen, but was never able to close on Dellinger, who won by a quarter lap. Watson was second at the checkers with early leader Stiffler third, Young fourth, and Justin Carlson fifth.

Dan Lewis and Art Gilchrist started on the front row for the Joslin-Landis Insurance Agency Street Stock feature with Lewis taking the immediate lead. A four-car pile-up sent two-time winner and points leader Ken Zimmer to the pits for repairs but Zimmer was unable to return to the event. After restarting Lewis held onto his lead with Dave McLaughlin in hot pursuit. McLaughlin was unable to get by Lewis, who went on to his first win at raceway 7. McLaughlin was second followed by Brian Wagner, Art Gilchrist, and Mike Cross. Carlos Aponte was disqualified from his apparent third place finish when he failed to make minimum weight. Jamie Duncan, who had apparently crossed the line in fourth with his car smoking badly, was black flagged at lap 13, setting him back in the standings.

Chuck Simms Jr led flag to flag in the Challenger Mini Stock feature to pick up his first win of the season. Joe Plesniak and Kyle Jackson followed the winner across the stripe.

Conneaut, OH, (June 20, 2008): The sky was bright blue when fans and competitors arrived at Raceway 7 for a night of racing that saw third-running Brad Rapp declared the winner of the small-block modified feature after the top two across the line were disqualified. Also in the winner’s circle were Rich Michael Jr and Ken Zimmer, each for the second time this season, and Vince Simms for the first time in his career.

Former track champions Hugo Litwiler and Joel Watson led the 22 Applebee Motorsports E-Mods to the green flag with Watson jumping out to a commanding early lead. Craig Bedell came to second at lap four. After a restart Litwiler got back by the front runners for the lead but opening night winner Rich Michael took over at lap seven. An eight-car pileup then stopped the action at that point with Michael leading, Litwiler second, and twelfth starting Mike Potosky third. After the restart Michael shot out to a big lead, but Potosky was quickly to second and chasing down the leader. Points leader Gary Eicher was third at the halfway point. After halfway, Michael steadily built up his lead, even though the action was slowed three times by caution periods. Michael scored his second Raceway 7 win of the season over Potosky, Eicher, Watson, and Kyle Bedell.

Dan Lewis led the Joslin-Landis Insurance Agency Street Stock feature from the pole, opening a large lead over Shaun Fawcett early in the event. A lap five caution erased his lead, but after restarting the event Lewis again led, this time with Ken Zimmer in hot pursuit. On lap eleven, Lewis slipped high in turn two allowing Zimmer to get alongside and finally complete the pass at lap twelve, but Lewis got back by after contact with Zimmer in turn one. Before the end of the lap, Carlos Aponte spun his mount in turn two, bringing caution over the raceway and putting Zimmer back in the lead. Zimmer led the final three laps for his second triumph of the season, beating Lewis to the line by several car-lengths. Dave McLaughlin was third at the line with Jason Stanke fourth and Ed Bolyard fifth. Fawcett, who had crossed the line in the fourth spot, was disqualified for not crossing the scales at the conclusion of the event.

Eric Gabany led from the start of the modified feature with Brad Rapp chasing but under constant pressure from Jimmy Holden. After a restart at lap six, Holden was second. Holden then pressured the leader and took over the front spot at lap ten, the half-way point. A four car pile-up at lap 13 slowed the action with Holden leading, Gabeny second and Brad Rapp third. One lap after restart, Rapp spun, seemingly out of contention. At lap sixteen, second running Gabeny slammed the first turn wall, again slowing the action. Holden went on to the apparent win but was light at the scales apparently handing the victory to second-running Frankhouser, who had neglected to report to the scales before heading to the pit, which is an automatic disqualification. By default, the winner was declared to be the third car across the finish line, Brad Rapp, who had worked his way back to the front after his spin at lap thirteen. Second was awarded to Steve Barr, with on Eperthener being awarded third place.

Vince Simms was the early leader in the Challenger Mini-Stock feature with Bud Sergeff right behind. At lap five Sergeff was the leader just as yellow came over the raceway for a three-car incident in turn four. By lap eight, Joe Plesniak was the leader but spun out of contention on turn two of the final lap, handing the lead and the win to Vince Simms. Sergeff followed in second. Points leader Ed Huge was third with Plesniak winding up fourth and Darren Hart fifth.
